Guide to the City Budget
The city’s budget can be a difficult thing to wrap your head around. The Fiscal Year 2019 budget proposed by Mayor Jim Gray comes in at 536 pages. While this seems lengthy, almost every individual line item the city spends money on is in the budget, including everything from computer software for the city’s Substance Abuse programs to cement for Sidewalk Repair. So—it makes sense that it would be so long.
That being said, the budget is one of the most important documents in the city - it is a representation of our city’s short-term priorities, and an articulation of what we value as a community. But it’s complicated.
