Week of February 28, 2022

Thank you, Next Challenge!

We’re excited to announce that the CivicLex team had the honor of winning The Next Challenge Community Service Award! This honor comes from the Glen Nelson Center at American Public Media Group in partnership with WarnerMedia, Google News Initiative, and others! We are humbled and want to thank you for recognizing our work!

🔎 - Big topic this week: The new Commission for Racial Justice and Equality will hold its first meeting!

In their first-ever public meeting, Mayor Linda Gorton will explain the duties and purpose of the Racial Justice and Equality Commission. Tiffany Brown, the Mayor’s Equity and Implementation Officer, will work closely with the commission. There will be a discussion on how the relationship between them will work. The commission will also establish a regular meeting schedule.

All public and media may attend this meeting in the Council Chambers of the Government Center (200 East Main Street) on Wednesday, March 2 at 3 pm.

🔎 - This week in City Hall: Abandoned Shopping Carts

The abandoned shopping cart discussion will return in this week’s Environmental Quality and Public Works Committee on Tuesday, March 1 at 1 pm.

We first covered this issue in June 2021 and covered the follow-up in August. Since then, the committee has been in touch with businesses in the community about abandoned shopping carts. New feedback from these businesses has led to changes in the proposal.

  • Removed Private Land Requirement - In the last proposal, the cart owner would have to ask a private property owner for permission to enter the property and take the cart. Taking this requirement away simplifies the collection process.

  • Removed fines for any partners who are implementing cart-collecting measures.

  • More flexibility in cart signage - Carts only need to display the company name and use other information on file for contact.

  • More flexibility on forms of communication about carts - the committee will now allow all forms of contact for passersby and code enforcement to report abandoned carts to its home business or LFUCG.

The recommendation is to continue communication with businesses in Lexington through this process.

In June of 2021, LFUCG recommended more discussion to ensure the city would not be burdening business. The committee followed through on this recommendation. Another recommendation was to start better coordination with the Office of Homeless Prevention and Intervention. This recommendation has not been mentioned since then.

🏃 - Get Engaged

Register for On the Table

Hope you’re not tired of hearing about this— we’re not done talking about it yet! This April, CivicLex and community partners are hosting On the Table, a week of community conversations about Lexington’s future. On the Table is an opportunity to gather publicly or privately, in person or virtually, and talk about the basics of our communities: the environment, jobs, neighborhoods, transportation, and more. Be sure to tell your family, friends and co-workers! These conversations will be used to shape Lexington’s Comprehensive Plan, one of the most important documents in our local government. Sign up today— your voice deserves to be heard!
