A platform for those who will never have the chance to sit on Council or hold office to see direct impact
My journey to Lexington was not a straight line. Born here but not raised here, eventually returning my second year of college when I transferred to the University of Kentucky. That was followed by establishing roots for the same reason so many do here: marrying and raising children. That’s almost 20 years ago now and I’ve never felt more at home than I do in Fayette County today.
I was disappointed to not be selected during the first drawing for the Civic Assembly. So, when the email arrived I had been selected as an alternate, I was even more excited for the opportunity.
I’ve been working for years in government policy in my career but always at the Federal and State levels. My local government has consistently been the form I am least connected to—but in many ways has the most impact on my day-to-day life.
The Civic Assembly has provided an opportunity to be directly involved in such an accessible way as a citizen of Lexington. Often local government feels run by a handful of people whose yard signs you see every couple of years.
CivicLex has given a platform for those who will never have the chance to sit on Council or hold office to see direct impact through this unique gathering. To be on the very first of hopefully many more in Lexington has been nothing but a positive experience so far.
