Final Project: The Living City
Filmmaker - and game designer - Tony Gilmore created a board game based on his time with Lexington’s Environmental Quality and Public Works (EQPW) department. He began his residency with plans to make a short film, but in his first months of the program he realized how important engaging residents is to the EQPW department.
The board game - called The Living City - is a collaborative effort to achieve projects and fix problems that EQPW employees see every day. In one scenario, players must work together to fix a broken machine at the recycling center. In another, Lexington receives several inches of snow and players work with streets and roads employees and engineers to clear the roads. The goal of The Living City is to work through the narrative of each Project, resolving the Project circumstances to ultimately make the City a better place to live.
Tony has big plans for The Living City, outside the scope of this residency! He has received grant funding to print over 3o copies of the game, and plans to bring them to the Schools, Libraries, and Community Centers of Lexington.
