Redistricting Workgroup Meeting September 28
The Redistricting Workgroup met on September 28. The group's purpose is to evaluate the 2021 and 2011 redistricting processes to discuss ways Lexington can improve the process in 2031. They'll also discuss ways the LFUCG administration can improve documentation of the 2021 and 2011 processes. Check out our page covering Lexington's 2021 Redistricting process here.
The Redistricting Workgroup discussed the current guidelines for redistricting and make changes as it saw fit. These guidelines will be used to guide the 2031 redistricting process. Most of the guidelines were kept the same, but there were a few that the Workgroup voted to remove.
The Workgroup agreed to remove guidelines g-9: "New districts should be formed with as little change as possible to existing districts," and g-10: "Sitting councilmembers should not be moved out of their districts."
There will likely be two more meetings. The next meeting is Thursday, October 13 at 3 pm in the 5th-floor conference room of the government center.
After the Workgroup finishes its work, the new guidelines will be reported at the General Government and Social Services Committee Meeting. The committee can make changes, which will be reported at the Council Work Session before a Council Meeting for its final approval.
