Short Term Rentals Overview

In October 18th’s Planning and Public Safety Committee Meeting, there was a presentation on the Short Term Rental Workgroup, created and led by Councilmembers James Brown (District 1) and Liz Sheehan (District 5). Short term rentals are units that are rented out for limited amounts of times to tourists — typically, these are AirBNB or Vrbo rentals.

The Workgroup began examining short term rentals in March 2022, with the aim of resuming work that fell to the wayside in March 2020.

The presentation will focus on how the Workgroup has held conversation with “responsible Short Term Rental operators” and residents in neighborhoods with a lot of short term rentals. They will also present proposed legislation that will give certain regulatory powers to the Division of Revenue and the Division of Planning. The Division of Law is working with these departments to draft these regulations and ordinances.

There will be a special Planning and Public Safety Committee meeting on Tuesday, November 29 to allow public comment and Council discussion on the proposed ordinances.
