Tech Association of the Bluegrass Presentation

In Tuesday’s Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee meeting, Nick Such of the Tech Association of the Bluegrass (TAB) presented an overview of the tech industry in Lexington.

TAB argues that Lexington, while once a tech industry hub with large employers like IBM and Lexmark, needs more investment in tech work to rebound the industry. Currently, tech industry jobs make up 4% of jobs in the Lexington-Bluegrass region

The presentation does not make a specific ask for funding from Council, but cites initiatives by peer cities to grow their tech industries as a roadmap that Council could follow.

When asked what Lexington needed to do in order to become a technology employment hub, Such said that stronger partnerships between education institutions like FCPS, UK, Transy, and BCTC with private tech employers would provide better training for future tech workers through internships and apprenticeships, and also would retain tech workers by allowing them to pursue job opportunities in Lexington that they otherwise may not know exist.
