EQPW hears stormwater and road closure updates

Updated 9/18/23:

Last week, Engineering Section Manager Mark Sanders, presented to the Environmental Quality & Public Works Committee an overview of how stormwater projects are prioritized, what projects are in the works, and summaries of recently completed projects. You can read our summary of that presentation here. No action was taken on the item

After that, Commissioner Nancy Albright presented on the current communications plan for road impacts and closures in Fayette County. The presentation provided clarity on how the city defines “major impacts”, and at what point in the planning process they start notifying neighbors and residents about road closures. You can read our summary of the presentation here.

Councilmembers were curious about the different processes for communicating with community members, especially if closures impact bus routes. Commissioner Albright discussed the difficulty in getting the word out since people get their information from so many different places, but Councilmembers expressed gratitude to have her as a point of contact for this information. No changes were made to the communications process.

The Environmental Quality & Public Works Committee will meet Tuesday to hear updates on current stormwater projects and the process LFUCG uses to communicate road closures.

Mark Sanders, Engineering Section Manager, will present to the Committee an overview of how they prioritize stormwater projects, in addition to updates on current projects and summaries of recently completed projects. The majority of current and future stormwater priority projects are in the South Lexington between Harrodsburg and Nicholasville Roads, and in East Lexington areas near downtown and the Ashland area.

Next, Commissioner Nancy Albright will present on the current communications plan for road impacts and closures in Fayette County. A major road project requires communication from LFUCG, and factors to determine if a road project is major include:

  • Time of day construction will be occurring

  • Whether the project is near an intersection

  • How long the road will be closed

  • Whether construction will be on the full road, one direction of the road, or a single lane

  • Proximity to job centers and business hubs

You can view both presentations here. The Environmental Quality & Public Works Committee will meet on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at 1pm in Council Chambers. You can attend in person or watch live on LexTV.
