Council Approves Housing Assistance For Homeless Families

On March 7th, Council approved funding for two nhousing assistance and eviction prevention services:

  • $150,000 to Goodwill, who will pay first month’s rent and a security deposit on new units for families identified as homeless by Fayette County Public Schools.

  • $100,000 to Legal Aid of the Bluegrass to further fund existing legal representation, mediation services, and potential back rent payments they provide to tenants of properties operated by the Lexington Housing Authority who are facing eviction.

This funding will support the two efforts through June 30th. Additional funding will be requested in the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget, which will be crafted from April to June of this year and take effect on July 1st.

These initiatives come after recent discussions over the end of the federally-funded Housing Stabilization Program, which spent $53 million from 2021-2023 on rent and utility payments and legal services for renters facing eviction in Lexington.
