Goal 4 Workgroup August 23 Meeting

The Goal 4 Workgroup will meet Tuesday, August 23. This Workgroup is tasked with addressing the issue of sustainable growth and the Urban Service Boundary in Lexington.

  • The next Comprehensive Plan update will likely be adopted by Council in the next 4-6 months. It will include a number of recommendations about urban and rural land use balance.

  • This Workgroup is named Goal 4 Workgroup because it was designed to address Goal 4 of Theme E of the current (2018) Comprehensive Plan, which calls for a new process for determining long-term land-use decisions involving the Urban Service Boundary & Rural Activity Centers.

  • This Workgroup is tasked with creating a better process for addressing one of the most contentious political issues in the Comprehensive Plan.

  • After this meeting, the Goal 4 Workgroup has one more session in September.

Meeting Update: August 26, 2022

The Goal 4 Workgroup had its fifth meeting last Tuesday. The Workgroup exists to create recommendations about growth and the Urban Service Boundary for this year's Comprehensive Plan — you can learn more about the Workgroup here.

The group looked at a series of land maps outside the current Urban Service Boundary that showed information about soil quality, where sewers could be quickly built, conserved or otherwise protected properties, and more. You can view these maps here.

They also looked at two areas for potential expansion around Winchester Road and Richmond/Athens-Boonesboro Road. No final decisions or recommendations related to these expansion areas were made.

D1 CM James Brown made a motion to add several more meetings for the Workgroup to the calendar. Starting September 6, the Workgroup will hold weekly meetings on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. through the end of the month, with the first two Tuesdays of October as potential extra dates.

The next Goal 4 Workgroup meeting, will be on September 6 at 10 a.m. in the Government Center's 5th Floor Conference Room.
